When Tanya Ravichandran sent in her editorial for review, we had to ask a few questions–– after all, she is a fifteen-year-old photographer putting together productions like she’s been in the business for years! Take a peek at her editorial below, and her Q-and-A.

A: Tell us a little about yourself and your background.
T: Hi! My name is Tanya Ravichandran, and I am a 15-years old American born Indian photographer from Cupertino, California, which is probably best known as the home of Apple.  My passion is fashion photography, and I love to capture a unique and ephemeral image which showcases the collaborate of our team, including  the model, the creative team.

A: What got you started in photography?
T: My family and I traveled a lot, and my dad would take photos during our trip. I often borrowed his camera, and I would play around with the settings, posting cheesy edits to my Instagram account.  When I was around 10-years-old I saved up money and bought my first camera, a Nikon D90. I decided to take photography more seriously, and I got into lifestyle photography. When I was 13-years-old I was approached by Pacific Sunwear (PacSun) to shoot for them from there I continued to grow until the end of last year when I decided to veer away from lifestyle photography and go into the beauty and fashion world; leading up to where I am today.

A: What kind of work is your favorite to shoot?
T: I love doing beauty editorials, I believe beauty shoots highlight the whole team’s skills and brings us together more!

A: Tell us about a typical production for you. How do you go about setting up your shoots?
T: During my free time, I make numerous mood boards with concepts for shoots. I keep a “line” of them and decide which concept I want to shoot. After making the mood board, I put together a team and reach out to an agency in my area.

A: Where did you learn about photography?
T: I am self taught! I experimented with my camera and learned how to use it and composing a photo through practice. I sometimes do fun shoots with other photographers in my area and I learned a lot from them and their workflow.

A: What equipment do you have in your kit?
T: Canon 5DS, Canon 24-70mm 2.8, Canon 100mm 2.8

A: Who are some of your favorite artists?
T: There are a variety of artists that I look up to, but some of my favorites include:
Carlos and Brittany Alyse, Anairam, Olivia Malone, Zoey Grossman, and Charlotte Wales.

A: What inspires you to create?
T: Other artists, music, and my parents inspire me to continue to create.

A: At only 15 years old there is so much ahead for your career–– what are some of your goals?
T: I aspire to create new content and to continue to evolve and grow in my photographs. I hope to go to college in New York and continue to build my skill and hopefully own my own studio one day.

A: If given the chance to photograph anyone in the world, who would it be?
T: I would definitely love to shoot Sasha Blane. She very unique and is a great advocate of individualism.

A: Do you have any advice for young photographers looking to make their mark?
T: There is going to be a lot of rejection but with rejection comes with a lot of success. Many people had rejected me for my age but after I continued to improve, some had contacted me back. How old you are should not determine the jobs you get, but rather the talent the photographer holds. During your journey, you will continuously compare yourself to other photographers, but by doing that you get stuck in your own shell. And my last piece of advice is to not be afraid to contact people! Before I send an email the only thing I think is, the worst thing they can say to me is no or not reply back. And even if they do either of these things, there will always be the future where you can get back up on your feet and try again.
